Cosmetic vs. cosmeceutical skincare – what’s the difference?
Simply put, a cosmetic skincare brand has only a temporary effect on your skin – whether this is soothing, hydration, tightening or smoothing. When you wash your face and remove the products the benefits are largely removed as it sits on the surface of the skin. It doesn’t mean that the brand you use on a day-to-day basis is bad or ineffective – it just means they are better suited for maintenance rather than treating specific surface based conditions.
A cosmeceutical skincare brand contain more ingredients that work in the deeper layers of your skin and have an effect on your skin works and how it behaves. The ingredients used in cosmeceutical skincare start a process (such as collagen production for example) and the effects of this may continue to be evident for a period of time after you have stopped using the product. These types of skincare are excellent for tackling persistent skin conditions such as acne, rosacea, scarring, loss of elasticity, pigmentation and photo-damage and ageing.
So how do you know what your skincare brand is?
Cosmetic or cosmeceutical? This can be a little more difficult as the term ‘cosmeceutical’ is not legally defined so it is sometimes abused in product marketing with some brands overstating the effects of their products (mascara commercials anyone?). Don’t be afraid to ask your beauty therapist for their advice on your skincare regime – they are the experts after all!
